Shakespeare’s plays are classical literary works in the world.As one of four Shakespeare’s famous tragedies,Hamlet is the most famous play,which represents the highest achievement in Renaissance literature.A lot of scholars who appreciate the plays have conducted the researches on Shakespeare’s works in various kinds of fields.Besides,researches on the translation of Hamlet have also attracted researchers’ attention home and abroad.In other words,since the translations of Hamlet have been introduced over 100 years in China,they have a great research value.In addition,image,as an important element,plays a significant role in the translation studies.The culture-loaded images render the vividness of the lines and convey the theme of Hamlet as well as arouse readers’ aesthetic feelings.Lots of scholars also take various translation strategies to deal with the images in Hamlet and enrich the translation studies of Shakespeare’s works.Therefore,how to deal with the translation of culture images in Hamlet becomes an important principle in translation study.This thesis concerns on the translation of images in Hamlet in Zhu Shenghao’s translation via quantitative and qualitative analysis.It will take Bassnett’s “seed transplanting theory” as its theoretical basis to analyze the translation of images in Hamlet.After understanding the “seed” in the theory,this thesis looks up the relevant papers about image and literary translation and finds that literature image can be one of the seeds in literary translation.With the knowledge of image research from Duan Zili,he takes an analysis of the translation of image in Hamlet from two levels: language and culture.As a conclusion,the thesis reviews the translator’s strategies for transplanting these images.As to the dominating images and rhetoric images,Zhu resorts to literal translation to represent most of dominating and rhetoric images in Hamlet.Besides the literal translation of rhetoric images,there still some metaphors being transplanted into similes to reveal rhetoric images vividly in Zhu’s translation.In addition,Zhu takes transliteration strategy to transplant the most of mythological and religious images.Therefore,through transplanting the cultural connotations of images in Hamlet,these images are successfully retained in Zhu’s translation.
