Instrumental And Strategic Sub-competences Of The Translator

The source text in this thesis project is from Peak:Secrets from the New Science of Expertise,a book written by psychologist Anders Ericsson and a veteran science writer Robert Pool.Its 4th chapter reviews studies in various fields(such as music and sports)and concludes that deliberate practice is the way leading to expert performance in a given field.Adopting deliberate practice or a method similar to it can improve a person's competence in a field.This conclusion can enlighten people from all walks of life,including translators.Translators can use deliberate practice to improve their translation competence.The PACTE group developed a translation competence model based on empirical research,which includes five sub-competences:bilingual,extra-linguistic,knowledge about translation,instrumental and strategic.In this thesis project,the source text is written in a popular and practical way,and it has a few striking features:1)it uses many technical terms,which often appear in the research literatures of expertise studies,music,sports and other fields;2)its use of punctuation and of sentence structure seem to be different from that in Chinese.In view of the above-mentioned facts,this thesis makes an analysis of the instrumental and strategic sub-competences of the translator in this translation exercise,including choosing and using suitable translation tools(including paper and digital ones)for translating technical terms and proper nouns,and appropriate translation strategies(such as punctuation translation methods,amplification,and omission)for solving specific problems.
