The translation object of the report is selected from the first three chapters of The History of Mr.Polly written by Herbert George Wells(1866-1946)who is a famous British novelist.Based on the translation text, the author made a preliminary study on the text to be translated. The text selected from the novel has following characteristics:firstly, intense and concise;secondly, humorous and ironic;thirdly, vivid and funny;lastly, exaggerated and jocose. The writer is good at describing a tragedy by using comic writing style. This report begins with the research target, the related research background and significance, and then develops a case study, including an analysis on the source text,an overview of preparation for translation.Besides, the report discusses the problems encountered in the translation progress from the perspective of lexical, syntactic level, for instance, the translation of the cultural-loaded words, the translation of dialogue statement, etc.Afterwards, based on functional equivalence theory, the report focuses on the translation strategies used to deal with the text from the above two levels, including word conversion, division, amplification, sentence reconstruction and so on.At last, the report summarizes and assesses the translation process, and to provide the relevant experience and lessons for the later translation work.
