| With the continuous development of the hotel industry and tourism,there are a growing number of books on hotel management.As China’s hotel industry and tourism are undergoing rapid growth,it is of great necessity to learn from experience and development process of hotel industry in other countries,so that Chinese hotels can make use of valuable practices and improve their management.From this perspective,translation of hotel management books becomes an important part of the translation field.However,there are not many studies on this kind of translation.The traditional translation strategy,which is loyal to the source text,makes translation not natural and difficult to understand,which only expresses the literal meaning and prevents hotels from learning good experience from hotel management books.“Are You an Ostrich or a Llama?” written by Larry Mogelonsky,introduces current issues in the hotel industry,discusses solutions and proposes novel ideas for this industry.Full of vivid real-life examples and challenges,the book will benefit hoteliers of any levels including,no matter hotel managers or apprentices.The paper is a translation report based on translation of Chapter Seven and Eleven of “Are You an Ostrich or a Llama”.During the translation,the writer has met many problems concerning words and sentences but solved them with the help of Nida’s functional equivalence theory.To help readers of the translation and of the original text get the same response,the writer uses Nida’s functional equivalence theory,which abandons the tradition of being text-oriented,but emphasizes meaning rather than form,so that readers of the translation and of the original text can understand and appreciate the text in the same way.The writer of the translation report translates the text under the guidance of functional equivalence theory,and deals with the original text flexibly from vocabulary,sentence pattern,discourse and style.Specifically,the translator adopts strategies like addition,omission,conversion,division and combination,in order to express the meaning of the original text in the translation.Such strategies of translating hotel management books can help future translation and supplement translation methods of non-literary translation. |
