| This is a translation project report.The source text for the translation project is The Report of the Iraq Inquiry released by Sir John Chilcot,Chairman of the Inquiry Commission on the Iraq Inquiry,on July 6th,2016.The Report of the Iraq Inquiry contains a total of 2.6 million words and was completed in seven years.It consists of one executive summary and twelve individual sections,mainly investigating the role of the UK in 2003 Iraq War and lessons learned from it.The chosen part is the chapter III of the executive summary and mainly introduces the UK's war news,military planning and its relation with the US in the "post-conflict" period.Difficulties in this translation lie in the fact that the source text involves a large number of proper nouns,whose translations need background knowledge of the Iraq war.Besides,there are many passive voices and long sentences in the source text,thus bringing a great challenge to the translator's logical thinking and language skills.According to the characteristics of the source text,Eugene A.Nida's theory of functional equivalence was chosen to be the guiding theory during the whole translation project.Correspondingly,various translation strategies were employed to analyze and solve the key and difficult parts,such as amplification,free translation and conversion.The project aims to provide the Chinese readers with a thorough understanding of the Iraq war,thus enlarging their historical knowledge through accurate translation.At the same time,it also exposes the cruelty of war and advocates the theme of "peace and development",thus arousing people to cherish the peace.By writing the translation project report,the translator has deeply realized that an excellent translator needs a sound attitude,a strong bilingual ability and a wide range of knowledge.The translator has gained rich experience and lessons in the process of translating,hoping to make greater progress in the future. |
