A Report On The E-C Translation Of Elizabeth Jolley’s An Accommodating Spouse (Section 1)

This thesis is a translation report on the translation practice of An Accommodating Spouse by Elizabeth Jolley,and the thesis selects the first part of the book as the source text.The novel describes psychological activities of the Professor,Delaware Carpenter.The plot of the novel presents to the reader the features of the protagonist.The writing style is diversity.The translation part is mainly talk about the Professor and his wife Hazel meeting each other,understanding each other,then getting married and having children.This part also describes the professor Carpenter’s forthcoming affair with Dr.Florence,which has already shown some signs.On the basis of characteristics of literature translation,and with the guidance of the theory of functional syntactic equivalence,the thesis attempts to better express the author’s intention then translates the text.In the process of translation,the thesis adopts the translation methods like recasting,fronting,postponement,combination,division and reinventing sentence structure and other methods,and further analyzes the parentheses,appositives and long difficult sentences in the novel and come up with the corresponding solutions in the translation practice.In the process of translation,we should adopt flexible translation techniques and methods according to the characteristics of the text.Through this translation practice,I have a deeper understanding of literary translation,and can better change the source language to target language.In addition,a good translator should equip with a good command of two languages and cultural knowledge,should acquire more knowledge of translation theories,and should advance the translation ability in various translation activities.
