| The original text “the wolf and the wolf myth in American Literature” is an academic research work written by the American ecological literature professor S.K.Robisch.And the selected part for this translation practice is the fourteenth chapter of the twins and the wolf case study.This chapter mainly focuses on the wolf stories for children and adolescents.In order to give a vividly ecological education to the readers,the source text author describes different kinds of wolf stories in line with the growth of the pair of assumed twins.This translation practice is aimed at making the Chinese readers learn the ecological education implied from the case study of the wolves and wolf myths in north America literature.Before the translation practice,the author overviews many mainstream translation theories,and finally make Reiss’ text typology as the guiding theory for this translation practice.The purpose of this report is to discuss the theoretical guidance of Reiss’ text typology in this practice.According to Reiss,the text typology can help the translator to decide the appropriate translation methods for the predominant function of the source text.And it divides text into four types.The informative text,the expressive text,the operative text and the audio-medial text.The content-focused text emphasis on the presentation of information,the appeal focused-text appeal,while the form-focused text expression.When combined with this translation practice,the author judges the source text’s main function by digging through its writing background,contents and features and gets the results of its literature research origin as well as its informative function which means it’s mainly a content-focused text and the referential information must be completely transmitted in the target text.Therefore,In the light of the above translation principles,the author adopts the traditional translation methods of free translation and literal translation as well as their combination of the translation technique of addition.In this report,the problems encountered in translation are divided into two parts,namely,lexical and syntactic levels.This report consists of four parts: the background of the source material,the preparation before translation,the translation theory and the application of it.Firstly,the text origin,its translation purpose and the structure of this report are introduced in the first part.And the second part of this report will analyzes the characterize of the source text on the base of the text type theory promoted by Reiss and is subdivided into the analysis of its writing background,content,writing style as well as the potential problems during the translation process.While the third part illustrates the main translation methods used in the specific cases selected from the lexical and the syntactic levels during the render process,which are the literal translation,free translation and adding according to the application of the text type theory.Last but not least,the fourth part of the report summarizes the gains and shortcomings of the translator in this practice. |
