In the 12 th Century,the style of the church building developed from Rome to the Gothic period in Western European.There are many factors on the establishment of the medieval Gothic church.Although the role of the city is mentioned,it is seldom deeply explored.But in fact,the city is an important factor.Gothic church is a medieval Western European city culture show.Gothic church is not a purely religious buildings,its establishment and development are closely linked with the secular society.Behind the intention of the church builders,imply the changes of the church power and social economic situation,especially the changes in the development of cities and towns.The church not only represents the power and ability of the bishop,also showed the Commerce Guild and the middle class wealth growth.Its development and decline are closely related to the medieval city.In this paper,the author analyzes the establishment,development,regional characteristics and decline of medieval cities and Gothic churches.The paper is divided into five parts.The first part introduces the historical background of the establishment of the Gothic church.The author believes that although the scholasticism provides a theological basis for the Gothic church,the support of the secular feudal lord also provides assistance,but the medieval city of Western Europe is the cradle of the birth of the Gothic church.The author highlights the influence of the medieval city on the establishment of the Gothic church.The second part analyzes the formation of Gothic church's artistic style from two aspects: the internal debate and the material basis of the Christian church.And highlights the influence of the medieval city ideology on the art style.The third part mainly explains the religious and cultural functions and secular functions of Gothic church buildings.Gothic church as a religious architecture,but also the civil society "strong will" expression of the media.The fourth part reveals the relationship between the medieval cities and the regional characteristics of Gothic churches.And discuss the influence of medieval cities on the regional characteristics of Gothic churches by selecting representative examples of buildings.The fifth part analyzes the relationship between the changes of medieval cities and the decline of Gothic church architecture from the perspective of politics and economy.The author focuses on the impact of the urban crisis,the loss of urban autonomyon the Gothic church.And discuss the relationship between the development of Italy urban capitalism and the rise of Renaissance architecture.The Gothic church architecture is the display of urban culture in the feudal system of Western Europe in the middle ages.
