| Established on semantic grounds, nominalizations can be isolated into event and result nominalizations.Specifically, deverbal nominalizations refer to a subtype of nominalizations derived from verbs, and they have eventive reading. In language, the eventive meaning may take forms,of which a deverbal nominalization is just one. Moreover, the frequency of the expressions varies greatly among languages as well as among genres. Therefore,as far as English-Chinese translation is concerned, deverbal nominalization may cause difficulties in language transference. The studies on nominalizations are mostly morpho-syntactic,with less concern with its translation. After a careful analysis, there are three problems worthy of further study, which are as follows: first, there are few studies with a classification of nominalizations from semantic perspective;second,EST is employed universally in the study, which leads to a similar text type;third, though the perspectives of study are diversified, there is a lack of an in-depth exploration of the meanings of nominalizations.Thereby, the study regarding the expressions with deverbal nominalizations as its object delves into the form that eventive meaning takes in English and its possible realizations in Chinese with the theoretical foundations of event semantics and the data retrieved from DECPC.Below is a list of the major findings.Firstly, when the expressions have eventive reading, their elements are comparatively free, for perspicuity articles, pronouns and possessives of proper nouns are permitted into the expression without enforcement. While, agents, predicates and themes, the core semantic elements of events are compulsory and indispensable.Secondly, the adjective adjuncts as a class of free meaning components are optional, that is to say their existence or not is determined by the need of communication. If the adjuncts are present, eventive meanings shall be greatly enriched. That the semantic reference of the adjective adjuncts is no easy to make certain will bring some difficulties in E-C translation. So,a thorough and correct understanding of the semantic features and reference of the adjective adjuncts is essential for a good translation.Thirdly,in E-C translation the Chinese “NP1+VP+NP2” clause is usually used to express the eventive meaning.By doing so,the translation will be more acceptable. The final out-birth of translation is the co-effect of many factors. As a result,in translation one needs to take various factors into consideration. The study reveals that the event semantics is really explanatory in that the logical expressions can effectively unfold the deep semantic relations within the categories, which paves a new possible way into the language transference, especially the translation between English and Chinese. |
