This is a report on the translation of Christmas Escape written by Elizabeth Bisconti Sullivan,an American clinical psychologist who loves to write fictional tales. The plot in this story seems simple, but arouses people's thinking. The story is about what happened during the heroine Lily's Christmas vacation.Lily hated Christmas due to her ugly memories of her alcoholic father spoiling festivities. While traveling from Chicago to Scottsdale to escape Christmas,Lily met a wounded ex-marine.Despite his scars, she was immediately attracted to his seductive personality. He was about to attend his sister's wedding alone.Unexpectedly when his family picked him up at the airport, they mistakenly took Lily as his girlfriend.Lily just went with it.At his family's ranch,Lily experienced a different Christmas, one filled with the magic of giving, and finally found her true love. The report is composed of four parts, including task description, process description, case study and conclusion. The first part mainly introduces the author of Christmas Escape, synopsis of the story, and the linguistic features of the source text.In the second part, the author talks about preparation before translation, problems and difficulties during translation and solutions, and methods to ensure translation quality. The third part Case Study is the most significant part in this report. The language in the source text is not difficult, but translation of adverbials has great influence on the overall quality. Therefore, the author mainly discusses how to translate the adverbials. For the classification of adverbials,Halliday's classification scheme in An Introduction to Functional Grammar is adopted, namely adverbials are classified into circumstantial adjuncts, modal adjuncts and conjunctive adjuncts. Then differences of adverbials in English and Chinese and ways to handle the adverbials in translation are introduced. The techniques of amplification, omission, conversion, restructuring and literal translation are proposed according to language features of the source text.Based on the statistical results of a self-built corpus, the author chooses the five adjuncts the percentage of which is highest for analysis of specific translation techniques.Writing this report enables the author to improve her translation ability, and learns how to analyze and solve problems,as well as how to explore translation techniques, providing reference and suggestions for adequate translation of adverbials.
