And the Mountains Echoed is the third novel written by the well-known Afghan-American writer Khaled Hosseini. It was published in America in May 21st,2013.In just 5 months after its release,it has been sold more than 3 million copies.Besides,Hosseini is also a Goodwill Envoy to the UN Refugee Agency, and the founder of The Khaled Hosseini Foundation. As an immigrant writer,Hosseini is deeply concerned with the lives of Afghan people and all of his works are based on the war-ravaged Afghan. And the Mountains Echoed mainly tells the story between Pari,Abdullah and Nila.Abdullah and Pari had strong feelings for each other. However, when Pari was 3 years old,her father sold her to Nila in Kabul. The sudden separation left Abdullah great trauma.Nila went through a hard time growing up.Her parents divorced when she was little.Later her mother died and her father was grumpy.Nila was constantly trying to run away from trauma due to the lack of care, but she failed. When her adopted daughter Pari started to date her ex-boyfriend,Nila committed suicide in order to end her trauma. This is a story of trauma, love, sacrifice and betrayal. In this novel,we can easily find everyone’s trauma and sorrow under the influence of war and broken families and how they managed to recover from the traumas. This thesis intends to analyze this novel from the trauma theory—the main characters’trauma symptoms and how they recover from trauma. This thesis first introduces the novel and its writer, literature review and thesis statement. Then talks about the theoretical foundation of this thesis and divides the trauma theory into three aspects—definition, evolving, symptoms and recovery. Then we analyze Nila’s and Abdullah’s trauma symptoms and recovery of trauma individually. Finally we conclude the thesis and show the theme of the novel—the importance of family and the call for world peace.Khaled Hosseini tries to send this message to everyone through describing the traumatized people.Wars and broken families traumatized countless people. The physical wound may be healed easily, but the wound in the heart will last for generations.
