A Study And Analysis On <The Ineffable>

Zhou Long,a Chinese American composer,was born in a family of artists.Affected by Chinese traditional culture since his childhood,every work of his compositions is full of Oriental philosophy in the creation thinking which includes from the ranges to the genres,the meanings of title to the musical elements.His creations also reveal the aesthetic ideology of traditional Chinese culture "literati thought".Zhou long's works have a wide range in form.And the mixed chamber is a kind of genres that he writes,explores and keeps trying.In this paper,the research of work"The Ineffable" is a mixed ensemble,scored for flute(piccolo,alto flute),percussion,pipa,zheng,violin and violoncello.Chinese traditional music provides many unique and charm materials for modern western music creation."The Ineffable",as the research object of this topic,aims at analyzing concrete composition techniques,digging into the connotations,etc.and getting a academic gist.This paper is divided into four chapters.The first chapter briefly sketches the composer's creative experience and his concept.The second chapter deeply analyzes the composition through the introduction,musical structure and the relationship between the pitches(landscape,portrait and mono pitch).The third chapter elaborates The Ineffable embodied in the works in terms of timber,sound,rhythm,tempo,speed and dynamic.The last chapter mainly discusses the practice instruction and the creation significance.
