During the past centuries, European oil paintings have been imported to China. At the beginning, Alia Prima technique was the first simple approach known by painters. Being the media of the oil paintings, the early Chinese foreign students learned the Alia Prima technique. Before the Culture Revolution, since the blockade to China lifted by the western counties, it was very hard to comprehensively understand the traditional oil paintings materials and methods. Since the reform and opening-up in the 80's of twenty-century, the communications between China and western countries are more and more widely, which make it possible that the Chinese painters could study the traditional materials of the western oil paintings. The history of European oil paintings has been about 600 years. It seems that people are forgetting the earliest indirectly drawing technique. However, the things, which were out of date to western painters, were still new to Chinese painters. The Alia Prima technique was developed from indirectly drawing technique. Indirectly drawing technique consists of the Tempera mixed technique, Gracio, and etc. Is this technique useful nowadays? This is a new research topic for Chinese painters, especially, oil painters. In recent years, there are more and more people doing research on materials and techniques of traditional oil paintings. There is no doubt that these researches will improve Chinese oil paintings. So far, in the field of oil paintings, lots of painters are applying indirectly drawing technique on oil paintings. Some of them generated great visual impact, which are very impressive. As a graduate student, I was supervised by professor Kongxi Liu. He did a series of research on materials and techniques of European traditional oil paintings. Professor Liu is also the expert in the utilization of traditional painting materials in China, especially in the field of Tempera technique. This thesis is my understanding of study on indirectly drawing technique during the past three years. I would like to make it public and share with my professors, classmates and others.
