This study draws on observation and semi-interview to explore teachers' teaching beliefs held by College English teachers, which are conducive to exploring teachers' behaviors. The observation provides insights into how they teach English in the classroom and the semi-structured interview explores the beliefs underpinning the teachers'classroom practices. There are four case studies in the paper to uncover the inner beliefs of college English teachers who are from Tianjin University of Finance and Economics. The study indicates that teachers'teaching beliefs cannot be fully embodied in their classroom practices, that is to say,the teaching beliefs throughout teachers' classroom practices are affected by complex tensions, such as students' real level or their own initiative, the pressure of examination and students' existing ability.Claims are also made here for the benefits of the study of tensions between the stated beliefs and classroom behaviors in the qualitative analyses of teachers' actual classroom practices. Some implications of this study to language teachers classroom teaching and the reform of college English teaching are also discussed.
