A Report On The Translation Of Chapter Ten Of Perspectives On American Law

This translation report is based on the translation practice of “Energy and Environmental Law”,Chapter 10 of Perspectives on American Law.This book is a legal treatise about American legal system written by American scholars of law,which is specially designed for Chinese readers,and Chapter 10 of this book introduces the energy and environmental law in America.This translation report describes the translation process,expounds the significance of the translation report,points out the research questions in the report,presents the translation theory and translation strategies applied,analyzes the linguistic features of the source text,and sums up the three typical problems in English-Chinese translation of the legal treatise,namely,long sentence translation,term translation and the issue of dealing with extra-linguistic knowledge.Under the guidance of Hans J.Vermeer’ s Skopos theory and the translation strategy that combines foreignization and domestication,this translation report puts forward corresponding solutions to the three typical problems.First of all,the translation skills of linear translation,inversion,division and synthesis are used to deal with the problem with long sentence translation.Second,in term translation,especially for the issue of lexical gap,the translation skills of literal translation,free translation and literal translation with annotation are applied into the translation.Third,for dealing with the problem with extra-linguistic knowledge in the translation,it is a key to strengthen the study and understanding of legal culture and legal knowledge to convey cultural connotations accurately.If necessary,annotation can be added to explain the legal culture to make readers understand it explicitly.The translation report not only demonstrates how the author conducts the translation practice and tackles the typical problems encountered in the translation process by applying the translation theory,strategies and skills,it can also provide a reference for other translators who are engaged in English-Chinese translation of legal treatises.
