The Application Of The Communication Strategies In Interpreting

Over recent years explosive growth of globalization and regional integration has increased the demand for multilingual communication in which interpreters play a crucial role.Interpreting as a professional is challenging and cannot be learned from theoretical knowledge alone,but only through a combination of study and steady practice.For student interpreters,apart from language proficiency,they should optimize their spare time to do some interpreting practice to gain interpreting skills.This report is based on the author’s interpreting experience in Shandong Weiqiao New Material Company from February 23th to March 19th,2016.In this report,the author first gives a brief description to the interpreting project,including the background of the project,client and direct users of the interpreting service and the task description;Then she describes the whole interpreting process from preparations before the project to each aspects of her interpreting content including on-site interpreting,conference interpreting and the banquet;Afterwards,she analyses the theoretical background of CSs and applies the according strategies which are mainly basing on Faerch&Kasper ’s studies to her practical working experience of the on-site interpreting during WQ’s equipment optimizing and commissioning phrase.Finally,the author reports the feedback from both the Chinese operators and foreign engineers as well as the author ’s self-reflections on her interpreting work.CSs is first proposed by Selinker who realized communication’s importance in the formation of inter-language without making a clear explanation.However,Faerch&Kasper ’s classification is the first detailed and impeccable study by gathering and drawing lessons from other scholars.Therefore,the author resorts to Faerch&Kasper ’s studies for reference,selecting four strategies from achievement strategies and reduction strategies which are the paraphrase strategy,the restructuring strategy,non-linguistic strategies and the formal reduction strategy.The application of CSs in interpretation field,especially when coming across difficulties or obstacles during the interpretation process,is of great importance to assist interpreters in handling problems and also plays a significant role in compensating interpreting skill defect to guarantee a fluent and decent communication.
