Research On The Rich Style Of Huang Quan’s Painting School

Huang Quan painting school is one of the flower-and-bird painting schools inFive Dynasties,holding an important position in the whole Chinese flower-and-bird painting history.Huang Quan is the founder of this school.It matured in West Shu of Five Dynasties and then it was carried forward in the early Northern Song Dynasty by his son Huang Jucai.Huang Quan and his son,imperial painters of ruling class,have superior painting talent,good at outlining subtly and coloring gorgeously.Their works are exquisite,neat,rich and gorgeous,deeply loved by royal family and scholar-bureaucrats."Huang’s system" has become the standards of the North Song Dynasty Painting Academy,occupying the dominant position of flower-and-bird factions in Song Dynasty.As a court painter,Huang Quan’s works’ themes,recorded in Tu Hua Jian Wen Zhi by Guo Ruoxu,are mostly exotic flowers,strange stones and rare birds.They are outlined subtly,drew neatly and colored generously,without ink marks.It is also like what Shen Kuo said,the works from Huang school is good at coloring.So it is called " Huang school is of nobel elegane".This article takes Huang Quan painting school as survey object and focus on studying its rich style.Huang Quan with rich style and Huang Quang painting school are two different concepts in one system.The former refers to Huang Quan himself while the latter includes impact on the times and historical inheritance of Huang Quan’s rich style.This article include four parts.The first part methodically analyzes the historical background of Huang Quan painting school from its beginning the painting and its artistic atmosphere influenced by West Shu of Five Dynasties.And then it shows the process of the creation and development of Huang Quan painting school in terms of its founder and successors.The second part analyzes the main artistic achievements of the founder and descendants of Huang Quan painting school.It also describes styles and characteristics of their works from four aspects,sampling,modeling,composition and techniques.The third part focuses on analyzing the rich style of Huang Quan painting school,the emphasis of this topic.First it analyzes the main connotation of rich style,including the meaning of "nobel elegance" and the historical origins of "Huang School is of nobel elegance".Then it elaborates concrete manifestation of "nobel elegance" in works.Finally,it discusses the historical value and practice significance of "nobel elegance".The forth part analyzes the influence and inspiration of Haung Quan painting school on the later from two aspects.One analyzes the impact of Huang Quan painting school on flower-and-bird painting of the later painters through the painting works in Yuan,Ming,Qing Dynasty.The other tries to summarize enlightenment significance of Huang Quan painting school to modern meticulous flower-and-bird brushwork through drawing,coloring and sampling.
