Research Of The Langue Mandarine By French Missionary Seraphin Couvreur

This research object of the master’s thesis is Langue Mandarine Guide De La Conversation Francais-Anglais-Chinois Contenant Un Vocabulaire Et Des Dialogues et Familiers,which is written by the French missionary,Seraphin Couvreur(1835-1919),The book uses English and French pairs of translation,for a wide range,is an elementary Chinese oral teaching materials.This paper mainly discusses the arrangement and teaching characteristics from three aspects: pronunciation,vocabulary and grammar.The first chapter is an introduction,which summarizes the research object,the research significance,the research status,the theory and the methods adopted as well as the sources of the materials will be put forward in this chapter.The second chapter is an introduction to Seraphin Couvreur(’s life and work.The paper will give an overview of the textbook from three aspects: the content of teaching materials,the way of writing and the orientation of teaching materials.The third chapter is pronunciation teaching.We will analyz Seraphin Couvreur ’s own pronunciation system,and it will be compared with the most widely used Wade pronunciation system and the French scholar Arnold Jaques Vissiere pronunciation system.t Seraphin Couvreur ’s pronunciation system is a more scientific phonetic system,which was based on the Wade pronunciation system,and combined with the French pronunciation.But it was influenced by dialects.The fourth chapter is vocabulary teaching.This chapter mainly analyzes vocabulary selection and arrangement,vocabulary content and teaching methods.Vocabulary was arranged with the topic.The number of words are appropriate.It was close to the Chinese culture.But the focus is not prominent.This chapter is lack of comments and examples.The fifth chapter is grammar teaching.The characteristics of the grammar teaching will be analyzed from two aspects: part of speech and syntax.Seraphin couvreur divided words into six parts.Although the classification is not perfect,but relatively clear.Interrogative sentences,imperative sentences,comparative sentences and "有" sentences are analyzed in the paper.The textbook basically covers all the subtypes of these sentences,but the number and distribution of these sentences are unbalanced.The sixth chapter is evaluation.Langue Mandarine is a French-English bilingual interpretation of the primary Chinese oral teaching materials,which is widely applicable.The textbook has comprehensive structure,varied topic,and progressive arrangement.It is is an excellent primary Chinese oral teaching materials at the end of the 19 th century.
