Based on Daniel Gile’s Effort Model of simultaneous interpretation,this paper conducts an empirical study and explores coping strategies of numbers in Chinese-English simultaneous interpretation by student and expert interpreters.First,this paper reviews previous research on how student and/or expert interpreters deal with numbers during interpretation and introduces Daniel Gile’s Effort Model of simultaneous interpretation.Second,it collects data through an empirical study and conducts quantitative and qualitative analysis.The results show that the strategies of the two groups of interpreters have three characteristics in common and differ in two ways.On the one hand,omissions are the most common problem;approximations are the most widely used strategy,mainly in addressing large numbers and percentages with the decimal point;and wrong interpretations mainly consist of wrong conversion of numerical magnitude and confusion of different digits within a number.On the other hand,however,expert interpreters approximate numbers more accurately and perform better in conveying the message carried by the numbers.This study is more detailed and intensive than the previous ones and hopefully,paves the way for further endeavors.More importantly,this paper provides a basis on which students may seek to improve their interpreting skills,and teachers,to perfect their teaching strategies. |
