An Analysis Of Foreignization And Domestication In A Dictionary Of Maqiao

A Dictionary ofMaqiao is a countryside-based novel written by Han Shaogong,and was translated into English by British Sinologist Julia Lovell.When the English version was published,it won immediate appreciation and acclamation in the English world.Julia Lovell proposed a translation principle called faith recreation,wishing to be faithful to the original Chinese work and introduce Chinese language and culture to the English world,and at the same time,ensure the English readers' good reading experience.To accomplish the former,Julia Lovell needs to use foreignization,and for the purpose of the latter,she needs to adopt domestication.The problem is when to use which one.Representative examples chosen from A Dictionary ofMaqiao are analyzed in this paper,and some strategies that can be referred to when the choice between the two is to be made are concluded as follows:if there is sematic context that enables the introduction of Chinese language and culture,and if foreignization helps with the translation and understanding of the context,then foreignization is preferred;if foreignization can make the translation more expressive,precise and at the same time readable,it should be used;if there is any irreconcilable conflict between the two languages and cultures that will cause misunderstanding on the part of English readers in the case of foreignization,domestication should be used;and if when foreignization is called for,the translation cannot be succinct,pithy and easy to understand using foreignization expression,domestication is to be used.
