Disyllabicity And Syntactic Consequences Of "Duan(短)～"

In modern Chinese,there are differences and close connections between the monosyllabic adjectives and the disyllabic adjectives which are formed of the monosyllabic adjectives.The monosyllabic adjectives and the disyllabic adjectives which have the same morphemes have two forms:On the one hand,the same morpheme is in front of the word,such as,cu(粗)—cucao(粗糙),cuguang(粗犷),cuzhuang(粗壮);On the other hand,the same morpheme is in the post,such as,bai(白)—xuebai(雪白),huabai(花白),rubai(乳白).In this paper,we research the first one and we choose the monosyllabic adjective“duan(短)”and the disyllabic adjectives“duanxiao(短小)”,“duanqian(短浅)”,“duanzan(短暂)”,“duancu(短促)”as our research object.The synchronic difference between both is described as follows:syntax and semantics,and this paper investigates the disyllabic process of“duanxiao(短小)”,“duanqian(短浅)”,“duanzan(短暂)”,“duancu(短促)”in the diachronic point of view,trying to explain the synchronic differences from the diachronic perspective.The first chapter is the introduction part,in which we introduced the purpose and significance of the research;A review of domestic and foreign research related to this article,including the comprehensive study of monosyllabic adjectives and the disyllabic adjectives,the differences of monosyllabic adjectives and the disyllabic adjectives.We studied the differences of disyllablization process and disyllablization influence on the development of the Chinese language;We showed the theories and corpus sources used in the study.In the second chapter we studied the syntax differences,and the monosyllabic adjectives“duan(短)”and the disyllabic adjectives“duanxiao(短小)”,“duanqian(短浅)”,“duanzan(短暂)”,“duancu(短促)”were contrasted from three aspects:Syntactic combination function,position holding function and syntactical structure access function.In the third chapter we studied the synchronic semantic differences.We discussesd the differences between that monosyllabic adjectives“duan(短)”and disyllabic adjectives“duanxiao(短小)”,“duanqian(短浅)”,“duanzan(短暂)”,“duancu(短促)”in three ascpets:nature and status,assertion and evaluation,connotation and denotation.The fourth chapter is about the investigation of the process of disyllabicity and its grammatical consequences.Firstly,we explained the semantic basis of disyllablization;Then we reviewed the disyllablization process of“duanxiao(短小)”,“duanqian(短浅)”,“duanzan(短暂)”,“duancu(短促)”;Finally,we explained the semantic change and semantic tendency caused by disyllablization.The fifth chapter is the conclusion,which summarized the main conclusions and shortcomings of this paper.
