Ditransitive construction,a particularly common phenomenon in English, which has been highly paid attention by the linguists at home and abroad. However, mainly analyzing the research of the “give” ditransitive dialogue construction is still a blank topic. What's more,no qualitative or quantitative research has come up.Dialogic syntax is a brand new theory attempt in the field of cognitive linguistics, functional linguistics, and utterance function research. It is an exploration of utterance syntax structure between the communicators, which has developed new perspective for cognitive linguistics. However, there are two disadvantages existing in this theory. The first one is that it has not defined the scale of the dialogue between communicators. And the other is that it has not revealed the hearer's replying strategy.Based on the event-domain cognitive model, multiple inheritance theory and dialogic syntax,We has built up a new model--EMD model to fill the gaps. And the we have collected 100 groups of the “give” ditransitive dialogue construction(“give”ditransitive construction is included in the speaker's sentence, but it may or may not occur in the hearer's sentence)from the Contemporary Corpus of America(COCA)to analyze this dialogue construction in details by means of the EMD model. There are five chapters in this study listed as follows:Chapter One shows a brief introduction to the motivations, research objective, methodology, corpus collection as well as the layout of this thesis.Chapter Two examines the previous studies of linguists at home and abroad concerning the ditransitive construction and “give”,and reveals the gaps and limitations of those researches.Chapter Three presents the theoretical framework. In order to fix the gaps and limitations of the previous researches, this paper has built an EMD Model.ECM is used to confirm the scale of the dialogue between the communicators, and MI is applied to reveal the hearer's reply strategy. Finally we plan to combine these three theoriestogether to explain syntactic, semantic and pragmatic features of the “give” ditransitive dialogue construction.Chapter Four is based on data description and makes use of the built EMD Model to analyze the features of dialogues in the “give” ditransitive dialogue construction, which is supported by the related data and proportion. The results are as follows:As we can see from the chart, the “give” ditransitive dialogue construction accounts for 88% in the syntactic resonance, which helps us arrive at the result that people tend to abide by the economy principle of language in the daily communication.Chapter Five provides a brief conclusion of the whole paper and deals with the possible contributions made by this research. The main contributions of the study lie in:Firstly,it is the first time to analyze the “give” ditransitive dialogue construction from single construction to the level of sentence or sentence group, and this paper has also poured new contents into the research of Neo-cognitive Pragmatics. It is also the first time to build a relatively fixed corpora of the dialogues of the “give” ditransitive dialogue construction through the method of calculation, classification and deduction.Combing ECM,Multiple Inheritance Theory and Dialogic Syntax to build an EMD Model,we apply this model to expound the “give” ditransitive dialogue construction.Secondly,Syntactic resonance, which discusses language communication trough the perspective of syntax, has broken the cooperative principle which is raised by Grice, because cooperative principle is composed of 4 maxims but overlooks the syntactic cooperation. What we do in this paper has offered some contributions for amending CPprinciple. Finally, through the research,we find that the syntactic resonance accounts for88% in the “give” ditransitive dialogue construction, which means people tend to apply the means of syntactic resonance when in the conversation including “give” ditransitive construction. The hearer tends to offer his or her reply by making use of the speaker's syntactic structure through the strategy of inheritance. And the semantic and pragmatic features can be revealed through syntactic resonance. It is statistically shown that the frequency of semantic and pragmatic resonance is almost the same as that of syntactic resonance.
