A Contrastive Study on Subjective Connotation between English and Chinese——Based on Modern Chinese Dictionary"(the 6th Edition)and "Oxford Advanced Learners’ Dictionary"(the 7th Edition).Emotive connotation,is one of nine connotations,which was put forward by Zhiyi Zhang.The emotional attitude it expresses is the emotion,attitude or evaluation that the subject for basic meaning(it is referent),and it reflects subjective information with basic meaning,such as happiness,love,anger,hate,respect,modesty,praise,and depreciation and so on,which can strengthen and enrich semantic meaning.As a representative of the normative dictionary,"Modern Chinese Dictionary"(the 6th edition)has carried on the detailed annotations for Chinese emotive connotations,but "An Advanced Oxford English-Chinese and Chinese-English Dictionary(the 7th edition)has only annotations for commendatory,derogatory meaning and partial emotive connotations.Therefore,we take the" Modern Chinese Dictionary "(the 6th edition)and" An Advanced Oxford English-Chinese and Chinese-English Dictionary(the 7th edition)as examples,and then we collect the English emotive connotations in " An Advanced Oxford English-Chinese and Chinese-English Dictionary(the 7th edition),and we mainly focus on example sentence and then focus on English oral example sentences,and we will sum up the English emotive connotation system through systematic analysis,and the English emotive connotation system will be compared with English emotive connotation system in several aspects,and in this way we can explore the reasons of causing differences,and further put forward the primary suggestions for tagging issues of emotive connotations in Chinese-English Dictionary.This essay can be divided into four chapters.The introduction part is to elaborate the present situation of research,significance of choosing this topic,source of corpus data,method and target of research and so on.In the first chapter,we extract the words with emotive connotations in English,and we sum up the 21 kinds of emotive connotations in English emotive connotation system: strong feelings or resolute attitude,surprise,pity,euphemism,opposition disagreement,offence,sincerity,blame,pride,sarcasm,disgust,love,humor,intimacy,kindness,appreciation,contempt,contempt,respect,curse,depreciation and praise;In the second chapter,we compare English emotive connotation system with emotive connotation system in several aspects,from the definition,occurrence mechanism and semantic change of Chinese and English emotive connotations to explore their similarities,and from types of Chinese and English emotive connotations and formation of causing connotations to study the differences.In the third chapter,we explore the differences between Chinese and English emotive connotation systems from the social cultural background,ways of thinking,development of words and national culture psychology.In the fourth chapter,we simply analyze the problems in compilation of current learner’s dictionary and put forward the primary suggestions for tagging issues of emotive connotations in Chinese-English Learners’ Dictionary.
