Based on Halliday's social semiotics and system functional linguistics, multimodality theory evolves and develops into a hot research in linguistics.According to the concept of social semiotics and system functional linguistics, language, image, text, sound and other symbolic resources constitute a variety of teaching modality together.Under the guidance of the theory of constructivism, teachers and students use a variety of symbolic resources to complete the construction and expression of meaning, making the teaching method more diversified.Combined with the current situation of college English listening teaching,"College English Teaching Requirements" clearly divides the students' listening comprehension ability requirements into three different levels, aims to improve students' listening level step by step. This paper uses multimodality theory to study college English listening teaching, explores the practical utility of multimodal listening teaching method, and validates the effect of the theory on language teaching, and provide reference for the development of multimodality theory. This study is based on the multimodality theory to explore its practical effect on listening teaching. It selected 100 college students of two non-English majors which were taught by the same teacher in the second grade in a university of Anhui Province, and began teaching experiment for 17 weeks. The subjects were divided into control group and experimental group. In the control group, the existing listening teaching mode was carried out,and the multimodal listening teaching was implemented in the experimental group.Using statistical software SPSS19.0 to analyze the data of pre-listening test and post-listening test,it indicates that there are obvious differences between the results of post-listening test of experimental group and the control group, there are also significant differences between the experimental group's results of pre-listening test and post-listening test. Therefore, the research draws the following conclusions:(1)multimodality theory has a positive effect on students' listening learning, which can help students improve their listening comprehension ability;(2)using multimodality theory in English listening teaching also can improve teachers' teaching methods and promote teaching efficiency;(3)the multimodality listening teaching method is superior to the existing college English listening teaching mode to some extent.
