| With the reform and opening-up entering into the fortieth year,the material life of the people has made much progress,and the intellectual life is also enriched.In the meantime,we even more eagerly want to give our voice of who we are to the world.The excellent classic culture is an important part that we should share with other peoples in the world.The Chinese classic Encyclopaedic Narration by Zhang Hua in the Western Jin Dynasty is one of the few and the earliest books of natural history in Chinese culture.Its contents involve geography,history,astronomy,biology,legends,rituals,etc.Therefore,it is an important basis for us to understand ancient Chinese culture and social life.Currently there is no English version of this book published,and the existing version in classical Chinese was also compiled by the later generations.Translated versions in modern Chinese language are only a few to count,which deserves the attention of interested scholars.The existing ten complete volumes of the book,with more than 18000 Chinese characters in total,are translated.Theory of semantic translation by Peter Newmark is referred to;and in the translation of the parts having rich culture connotation,theory of thick translation by Kwame Anthony Appiah can be a convenient reference.The author here adopts different translation strategies when encountering difficulties with the spirit of being loyal to the content and form of the source text,and tries to guarantee the quality of the target text from the levels of words,sentence structures and culture,restoring the true meaning that the author wanted to express.This report introduces the background,language style of the source text and the translation process,and in detail explains the usage of different translation strategies combining with detailed case analysis.The translation of proper nouns,culture-loaded information and different sentence structures in the source text applies different translation strategies with the hope of retaining the language style and form of the source text while loyally conveying the content.As to the tidy and rhyming rhythmic expression as well as myth and legend with profound message,the author uses simple language and structures,and tries to reserve the unique culture colour as far as possible.This translation version is a tentative practice of the translation introduction of Chinese classic culture,and the author hopes that it would draw the attention of interested scholars at home and aboard to the book Encyclopaedic Narration.Through the research and analysis of the translation report,the author expects to provide some useful suggestions for the translation of traditional Chinese cultural classics. |
