The present thesis applies corpus-based methodology to find out the distribution and translation of hedges in diplomatic languages as exemplified by Premiers' press conference,a form-focused text based on the classification of Reiss's text typology. With the continuous growth of the comprehensive national strength of China, multilateral cooperation and exchange between China and other countries is increasing frequently.Diplomacy is one of the important links between countries. As an important tool of diplomatic activities, diplomatic language, the language used in diplomacy to state a nation's position and view, and publish the result of the talk,is widely used in diplomatic activities such as bilateral talks between countries, press conferences and external propaganda. On diplomatic occasions, vague expressions are intentionally adopted by diplomats to achieve certain communicative purpose. In recent years, hedges have been an important research direction of vague linguistics, many scholars have conducted researches from the perspective of semantics to the cross-cultural comparison on hedges and achieved fruitful results. However, most previous researches focus on the very theoretic study such as fundamental theories and vague linguistics, the study of hedges in some special contexts lacks authoritative research results. This thesis applies corpus-based methodology for further analysis of hedges.A parallel corpus is built on the basis of speeches of Chinese Premiers in the press conference after the two sessions from 2007 to 2016 and their corresponding English versions with the help of the Trados program.By using the AntConc concordance program, hedges of the parallel corpus are retrieved and collected.Based on the data resulting from retrieval and calculation, the present research explores the distribution and translation methods of hedges in the diplomatic language in order to find out the representation and translation effect of hedges in target texts created by such methods from the perspective of Reiss's Text Typology theory. The research has the following main findings:1.The vagueness exists not only in general-used language but also in diplomatic language where they are unavoidable and irremovable. The proper use of hedges on diplomatic occasions makes contribution to the enhancement of language validity to some degree, rather than weaken the accuracy of diplomatic language.2.Translators always employ equivalent translation method while dealing with hedges in diplomatic language to keep the equivalent effect during the translation process under the guidance of Reiss's text typology.Amplification, omission and replacement will be adopted according to the context to achieve political fidelity.3.Type and function of the text, linguistic difference between Chinese and English, the purpose of translators are factors influencing the translation of hedges in diplomatic language.
