On The Application Of Flexible Translation Theory In Literary Translation

As a newly-emerged theory,Flexible Translation Theory provides a different perspective on the subjectivity of translator in literary translation.It entitles translators to be critical about the source text and puts forward applicable translation strategies to help them play better roles in cultural communication.Flexible Translation requires translators to do translation based on the needs of the target readers,which,to some extent,sets them free from the rigid traditional translation principle of fidelity so that they can give a better play to their subjectivity.During the translation of "Lydia’s Violin",it is found that there exists abundant culture-loaded information in the source text,which may bring barrier to the Chinese readers if translated without being further processed.Considering the well-knit plot of the story,the author found it might be improper to make any adjustment on the level of paragraph or text.In this case,the author only chooses reduction,addition and adaption among all the seven strategies of the theory to process the culture-loaded information on the level of words and sentences.The practice of translation indicates that Flexible Translation Theory works well in the literary translation.To translate based on the needs of target readers can help translators better fit into the demands of the modern information society and produce more acceptable translated works in effective and efficient way.
