The Projection Of Oriental Women—Chinese Female Images In 1920-30s Hollywood Movies

After reading a book called From Fu Manchu to Kungfu Panda:Images of China in American Film,I noticed that the changing process of Chinese images in Hollywood movies.Since Yellow Peril,the attitude towards China has changed several times because of sophisticated historical factors and particular background.The changes reflected the relationship between American and China.However,these facts and studies stay on sweeping concept,the study of Chinese female images in early Hollywood talkies is still blank.It needs to consider historical issues and current development state.While,for the other in cultural concept,Karl Marx said “ They cannot represent themselves;they must be represented.” The represented and misunderstood make Chinese supersensitive and overprotected.Colored roles once were acted by whites,now they should be acted all by different ethnicities?Or is it political correctness or social inclusion for the others.Considering Chinese female images appears on the Hollywood movies frequently,I endeavor to discuss the past images of Chinese female in 1920-30 s,in order to know the status of Chinese American women in America and Sino-America interactions at that time.The past colored roles had great influence on the colored roles today in American movies.The shadow never moves away,we need to know what it is and the reason,so that we can move on and change superficial understanding into diversified cognition.
