| With the rapid development of globalization, interpreters begin to play an increasingly significant role in bridging people from different cultural backgrounds together.In the process of interpretation, interpreters will face various difficulties and challenges, and pragmatic failure is a common difficulty or problem that interpreters often confront. Few types of research are found in the academic field of cross-cultural pragmatic failure. Most research achievements are summed up from the experience of interpretation teaching and working practices. Interpreters need to take cultural difference and pragmatic difference into consideration while transforming the source language into the target language accurately. So interpreters should be equipped with cross-cultural awareness and pragmatic competence.Traditional studies and researches on interpreting are mainly performed from the aspects of interpretation skills and linguistic competence,but the cultural difference and pragmatic difference are often overlooked. Those ignored factors are likely to cause misunderstandings or communication breakdown in cross-cultural communication. So the study on interpretation should take cultural difference and pragmatic difference into consideration. The thesis analyzes pragmatic failures in interpretation from the aspects of cultural difference and pragmatic difference, and gives tentative solutions to pragmatic failures in interpretation.The thesis is composed of three parts: an introduction, the main body and a conclusion.The introduction is about the research background, research method, research questions, research objectives and significance and so on. Most of the research achievements of interpretation are about skills and theories of interpretation. Few researches on interpretation are conducted from the aspect of cross-cultural pragmatic failure. Leech’s Politeness Principle is employed in the thesis. The innovative point of the thesis is that the thesis analyzes interpretation from the aspect of cross-cultural pragmatic failure.The second part is the main body of the thesis which is composed of three chapters:The first chapter introduces interpretation from the aspects of definition, form,process. And this chapter also introduces the studies of interpretation home and abroad.The second chapter introduces pragmatic failure from the aspects of definition,classification, characteristics and so on. And this chapter analyzes pragmatic failures in interpretation from the perspectives of cultural difference and pragmatic difference.The third chapter is about the solutions to pragmatic failures in interpretation.Interpreters should improve their cross-cultural awareness and pragmatic competence.The third part is the conclusion. The thesis reaches the conclusion that it is more effective to study interpretation from the aspect of cross-cultural pragmatic failure.Accessing the quality of interpretation from this aspect will help interpreters to learn from experience, and promote their motivation for becoming qualified interpreters in the future. |
