A Study Of The Chinese Translation Of Conceptual Metaphor In English For Science And Technology (EST)

English for Science and Technology(EST)has become more and more important with the development of globalization.Technical translation plays a crucial role in the communication of science and technology.In the past,metaphor was regarded as a mere rhetorical device in literary language.Nowadays it is widely used and indispensable in EST.It goes without saying that translating metaphor is an important part of technical translation.Meanwhile,conceptual metaphor is the main representation in EST metaphor and its translation is worth our attention.Hence the thesis is aimed at revealing and resolving the problems of conceptual metaphor translation in EST.The author firstly makes a brief review of the recent study of conceptual metaphor translation and that in EST in China and abroad.The views and approaches of conceptual metaphor translation are evaluated and summarized in literature review.It is affirmed that some scholars have made great contributions to the study of conceptual metaphor translation and that in EST;on the other hand,their points and methods can be used for reference.The author intends to study the issue from the integration of mapping scope in conceptual metaphor and relevance-theoretic approach.Then the author presents the definition,features and classification of conceptual metaphor before discussing conceptual metaphor translation in EST.She points out some problems that arise in the process of conceptual metaphor translation in EST.They are in the following:the deficiency of technical terms in target language,the deficiency of source language implicature in target language and the ambiguity in target language.The examples in the thesis stem from EST news,manual,some works,popular science,and teaching textbooks,etc.To some extent,they can be used for explaining the issue,though all instances are not included in EST.Though the instances are not covered in EST,In the theoretical part of the thesis,the author employs an integration of mapping scope and relevance-theoretic approach to deduce the principles of translating conceptual metaphor in EST.By this approach,the intention of source language author can firstly be inferred according to the mapping scope in source language;second,there is the correspondence of mapping scope for source language author and target language audience in terms of cognitive environment;thirdly,the optimal relevance of mapping scope can be achieved between translated text and target language.By the analysis of translation principles,the author puts forward appropriate methods of translating conceptual metaphor in EST into Chinese.The first is keeping the explicature of source language in translated text.The second is keeping the corresponding range of mapping scope between source language and target language in translated text.The third is enhancing the optimal relevance of mapping scope between translated text and target language in translated text.Meanwhile,the previous three problems of translating conceptual metaphor in EST can hopefully be resolved.The thesis is aimed at bringing some enlightenment for those who are engaged in technical translation from English into Chinese when translating conceptual metaphor.
