An E-C Translation Report On Basell Tubular Polypropylene Process By Relevance-theoretic Translation Approach

With polypropylene products playing an increasingly important role in various fields such as the domestic economy and people’s daily lives,it has been mainly used in the production of woven products,film products,injection products,textile products,and also in other fields,such as packaging,electronics,and household appliances,automobiles,fibers,construction pipes,etc.But at present,domestic polypropylene technology compared with foreign,there is still a certain gap.In light of this,accurate E-C translations of polypropylene texts will assist relevant domestic businesses in conducting additional research and expanding domestic and international markets.The original text of this translation practice is excerpted from the polypropylene process document introduced by Wanhua Group from abroad for occupational training.As mentioned above,polypropylene research plays an important role in the chemical engineering industry.The source text is of typical characteristics of scientific English text,featuring various word-formation methods,abundant nominalization,non-predicate verb structures in sentences,and strict logic throughout the text.As an informative text,the translation should be smooth while accurately conveying the original information to reduce reading effort.How to achieve a natural and accurate information transformation between source language and target language,and how to choose suitable translation theories to guide translation practice are vital in the translation practice.After a preliminary investigation,the author chose relevance-theoretic approach as the guiding theory of this practice.At the same time,effective translation strategies are used to make the target text accurate,fluent and professional at the three levels of vocabulary,syntax and discourse,so as to achieve the expected function of scientific English text to convey information.The case analysis of this practice report is the main content,which is elaborated from three aspects: vocabulary,syntax and discourse.In the last part of the report,the author summarizes the losses and gains in the translation practice,hoping to present some references and enlightenment to translators engaged in this field in the future.
