Due to differences of culture and ideology and expectancy norms of overseas market and target readers,Chinese literature and culture have been progressing at an extremely slow pace, and still lie in marginal status in English world although it has been several years since the proposal and implementation of the “going-global”strategy of Chinese culture. However,The Moon Opera written by Bi Feiyu and translated by Howard Goldblatt, has obtained much favorable comments abroad and published in several countries in succession. In other words,The Moon Opera has realized a successful travel in the West, and deserves further exploration and study. On the basis of relevance and common characteristics between natural science and translation activity, professor Hu Gengshen proposed approach to Translation as Adaptation and Selection early in the 21 century and that infused translation studies with new energy. The theory defines translation as adaptation and selection in the translational eco-environment,a set of various elements which exercise restraints upon the translator’s optimal adaptation and optimization selection, and produce an effect on the quality and survival of the target text. This thesis conducts a detailed investigation of the travel of The Moon Opera in the West and makes a deep analysis of elements in the translational eco-environment such as the translator, the source text and the publishing house in light of approach to Translation as Adaptation and Selection to reveal reasons of successful travel of The Moon Opera, and come to a conclusion: it is all the relevant elements including thetranslator, the source text, and the publishing house that jointly promote the success of The Moon Opera, with each playing an active role in its position. In addition, this thesis offers suggestions for the translation and transmission of Chinese works, hoping to expand studies of translated Chinese works and provide enlightenment for“going-global” of Chinese culture.
