A Translation Report On Mechanical Design

Nowadays,China is in a transitional and upgrading process from a big industrial country to an industrial power,and mechanical design,working as an assistor,promotes China's mechanics to develop by leaps and bounds.As a result,the study of mechanical design will be of great help in the promotion to the overall development of industry and even that of the whole country.Therefore,it will surely have important practical significance.Documents related to mechanical design written in Chinese or English monolingually have emerged in an endless stream,but researches on translation of mechanical design are relatively few.With the first two chapters of Mechanical Design as the source text,and Christine Nord's Text Analysis Theory and Skopos Theory as the theoretical guidance,this translation report discusses the translation strategies,translation skills and translation procedures of long and complex sentences,passive voices,sentences with vague logical relations and etc.by means of the integrity of theory and practice and the analysis of examples.This translation project supplies examples and guidance to the translation studies of mechanical designs.This project,which belongs to the category of translation for science and technology,is very technical in contents and few in references.The shortage of the background information and the terminologies makes this translation project even more difficult.Thanks to the good preparations in reference books,parallel texts,and consultation of professionals,a relatively veritable version is eventually made possible,in which translation strategies and skills on mechanical design textbooks are specially discussed from lexical and syntactic perspectives.Study methods,such as deduction,induction,analysis and synthesis,abstraction and generalization are mainly used in the summarization of the special characteristics of mechanical texts,and the translation skills as inversion,sense group translation,conversion and other specific translation methods are used to ensure the target texts suitable to the readers' reading habits.With the help of dictionaries,internet search engine,online translation websites and computer-aided translation softwares like Trados,a mini bank of terms is successfully established,which largely helps to avoid the dull repetitious work of translation,to speed up the translation task,and to guarantee the quality of the target texts.This translation program not only enriches the bilingual materials of mechanical texts in this field but also broadens the views of the translator in summarizing the characteristics of the source texts and the applications of translation strategies and skills.The qualifications of translators are clearly concluded and the new outlooks of mechanical text translation are predicted in details.
