Chen Zhongshi reached the pinnacle of his entire creative career with this blockbuster, yet his novels in the early and transitional periods should never be overlooked. The aim of this thesis is to analyze the evolution and development of Chen’s novels from the perspective of aesthetics and find out the aesthetic value in the change process.This thesis includes five chapters.The introductory theory will summarize the background and the research status of the thesis. The aim of the research, search route as well as the research method will also be mentioned.The first chapter will focus on the discourse patterns that Chen used in his early-stage novels. In the particular period of the Cultural Revolution, when political ideologies showed its extreme characteristics, the writers were inclined to shape the structure of the ternary relationship between the characters in the novel, thus discourse mode in the novels were determined. To meet the needs of such ideology, the writers, for example, shaped some fearless hero characters who devoted themselves for the construction of socialism.Chapter second will discuss the discourse patterns Chen used in his transitional period.The discourse patterns became plentiful little by little in the novels.Chen thought deeply of depriving history and reality, depriving politics and moral standards, literature and the arts. He focus on the ordinary life of the average instead of the hero image.Chapters three will bring out the discussion of the discourse patterns in Chen’s later-period works, especially the White Deer Plain. With all kinds of discource patterns intacted and balanced in the novel.Free indirect discourse is frequently used for portraying the main characters with a traditional moral paradigm such as Mr. Zhu and Bai Jiaxuan, in an attempt to build models that practice traditional morals. It is showed that Chen wanted to be a good image-builder.Last is the epilogue. This segment will summarize the changes of discourse patterns in Chen’s works. What contained in the discourse patterns have changed from simple political propaganda material to discussion related to social ethos, the survival of individuals, the social experience and life experience. The discussion on these changes will give us inspiration in aesthetic creation and aesthetic cognition. |
