China as a country with a long-standing history of over five thousand years has yielded a profound and colorful dietary culture.Most of the Chinese traditional cuisine names bear unique cultural connotations with image-telling expressions and their naming methods are varied.It is urgent to standardize and unify the translation of these cuisine names for the effective transmission of Chinese colorful dietary culture..The image-telling Chinese cuisine names are considered as a special part of Chinese cuisine names as they involve multiple naming methods which are difficult to translate.On the basis of different expressions of images,these naming methods can be classified into seven categories,including metaphorical type,metonomy type,symbolic type,benedictory type,hyperbolic type,allusion-qouted type and person/place type.A large number of translation examples for image-telling Chinese cuisine names have been collected in this thesis,and three types of problems in the translation have been summarized,including non-uniformity,meaning impairment and mistranslation.Furthermore,self-made questionnaires are used to obtain the public opinions on standardizing and unifying the translation of Chinese cuisine names.Finally,under the guidance of terminology theory,the author tentatively puts forward some translation principles,including monosemy,motivation,conciseness,accepted through common practice,stability,and systematicness and corresponding translation strategies,such as conversion,borrowing,literal translation and liberal translation.This research plays a significant role in the translation of image-telling Chinese cuisine names both theoretically and practically.From the theoretical aspects,it proves that it is feasible to apply the terminology theory in the translation research of cuisine names;from the practical aspects,it offers a list of operative translation strategies,which provides new train of thoughts for the unification and standardization of the translation of Chinese cuisine names.
