Guo Liang (1894-1936), whose zi is Kuangjian and hao isYanyuan.was from Fu'an county in Fujian. He was a painter who committed to the innovation during the 1920s to the 1930s.He was enlightened by the famous painter Zhu Duo in his early years. He moved to Fuzhou and met many celebrities in painting and became enthusiastic in literacy. From 1922 to 1930, he went to Shanghai several times to get inspirations where he had a contact with Western culture.He aggressively used red to pain the ladies faces. The combination of the Western uneven shading method brought a quite new view of painting faces, which was called "New Chinese Painting". In 1930, he founded the Dragon Pearl Painting Academy with Li Xia, Chen Zifen, Lin Jie, and Zhang Tangming, which had a tremendous impact. However, his fame was buried in history because of his early death and the ten years of turmoil during the Cultural Revolution. In his 42 years of artistic life, he devoted himself to the study of arts, and tireless inherited the tradition of classical portraits paintings. At the same time, he continued to broaden his horizons, actively innovated, combining Fujian regional materials and culture with Western painting techniques in his creations, gradually forming a unique artistic style which has his personal characteristics.In the history of modern painting in Fujian, Guo Liang is undoubtedly one of the important artists. His extraordinary painting skills and artistic skills make himthe backbone of Fujian modern painters. Particularly his portraits were compared to "Puxianerli". He was famous for his diligence in studying arts and the solid career obsession. This paper gives a three-dimensional rendering Guo Liang through analyzing hisartistic life and works based on the historical background and geographical features.
