Study On The Application Of Translation Variation Strategies To Chinese-English Conference Interpretation From The Perspective Of Relevance Theory

Under the guidance of relevance theory, this thesis discusses and analyzes the specific application of the translation variation strategies to Chinese-English conference interpretation in order to achieve the optimal relevance of the context. From the perspective of relevance theory, conference interpreting is an ostensive-inferential communication translation activity and involves three communicators which are the speaker, the interpreter and the target audience. In order to achieve the purpose of communication, the interpreter needs to find the optimal relevance of contexts between the source language and the target language meanwhile infer the real purpose of the speaker so as to output translated text properly by choosing corresponding translation strategies with the combination of audience's cognitive context. Since the translation variation strategies not only can extend the context of the source language to some extent but also can supplement the cognitive context of the target language audience, it can help the interpreter to achieve the optimal relevance between the speaker and the audience in the ostensive-inferential process and achieve the optimization of communicative function.This thesis takes the simultaneous interpretation from Chinese to English of the Summer Davos forum speech by Prime Minister Li Keqiang in 2015 as a text for analysis. According to the characteristics of conference interpretation, combined with many cases in corpus, the author analyzes and summarizes specific application of three translation variation strategies which are addition, omission and compilation in Chinese-English conference interpretation, so as to explain the guiding function of Relevance Theory in conference interpretation. And under the guidance of this theory, the corresponding translation variation strategies can help the interpreter convey the information and the communicative intention to the listeners more properly and accurately, so as to achieve the ultimate purpose of communication.
