The Processing Of Background Information In Translation Of Religious Historical Documents

Religion is a social ideology as well as a cultural phenomenon in the development history of human beings.It has an impact on people’s way of thinking,promotes the development of culture and witnesses the progress of human civilization.A History of Protestant Missions in Shanxi,based on the spread of Christianity and the history of its development,is completed with the combination of the customs of various places in Shanxi Province,which tells about the missionary history.It contains a large number of historical facts,geographical culture,religious culture,personal names and other information.The relevant background information affect and restrict the translation to a great extent.The general religious cultural knowledge and the historical development of Shanxi can provide the knowledge reserve for a better translation of religious historical books or literature in the future.At the same time,the translation strategies proposed in the translation process can also lay a foundation for the religious historical works or literature translation.The translator tries to enrich her cultural accumulation,improve the knowledge structure by continuous efforts so as to ensure the quality of the translation.Referring to the materials,finding the background information and communicating with the counterparts is also a process of self-improvement and accumulation of experience.This paper,taking the translator’s translation practice as an example,explores the processing of background information in the translation of religious historical documents.Combining with the different characteristics of historical facts,geographical culture,religious culture,and personal names,the translator resorts to the strategies of finding the relevant materials,referring to parallel texts and consulting the Christians to understand and translate the relevant background information.
