The Translation Of English Complex Sentences From The Perspective Of Functional Equivalence Theory

Based on the translation of story "No Man’s Land," this thesis discusses the strategies of English complex sentence translation from the perspective of functional equivalence theory of Eugene A.Nida,combining the syntactic differences between English and Chinese.Owing to the complicated structure of English complex sentences,the translation of English complex sentences has become a difficulty in English-Chinese translation.It is a high demand for a translator to give a translation that properly conveys the meaning of the original text with Chinese syntactic structure and natural expression.Functional equivalence theory can be used to guide the translation of complex sentences,which will make the translation accurate and appropriate.This thesis divides the complex sentences in "No Man’s Land" into four categories,namely complex sentences with many modifiers,inserted components,and/or participle structures,simple compound sentences,simple subordinate complex sentences and mixed complex sentences with a plurality of subordinate structures,and adopts different translation strategies,such as word formation,sentence splitting and kernel sentence,to these classifications on the basis of the contents of functional equivalence theory.As a result,the translated text will naturally show the information of the original text and the reactions and feelings of targeted language readers to the translated text will be the same as or similar to that of source language readers to the original text.
