A Practice Report On C-E Translation Of Traditional Chinese Medicine Text

Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM)is a special treasure of the Chinese nation and an important part of traditional Chinese culture,which is the valuable experience summarized from production,life and medical practice.Under the guidance of the ancient materialism and dialectics,TCM combines with Qi,Yin-Yang and Five elements to expound the physiology and pathology phenomenon.TCM language is full of classical literature color.Some contents originate from classical literature,which brings lots of difficulties in the translation process.During the translation process,some kinds of problems are found.For instance,firstly,TCM terminology is full of inconformity and unintelligibility,which is even hard to understand for Chinese people with deep knowledge of literature.Secondly,there are lots of medical classics written in ancient time.Then Chinese is mainly composed by short sentences and contains many verbs while English is filled up with long sentences and preposition words.Finally,there are having a lot in common between TCM and Western medicine,like the description of body organs.Thus,under the guidance of translation variation strategies,the author translates the introduction part of The Foundational Theories of Traditional Chinese Medicine.In view of encountered problems in the translating medical text,the author makes a discussion by means of four of variation strategies—addition,deletion,editing and narration in order to solve the above problems.
