Traditional translation theory considers that translation is just an activity of language transformation, and translators stay invisibility during translation process.Nevertheless, under the context of deconstructionism, translation not only deals with language, but also has the cultural and political strategic significance, and translators’ position and influence should be improved.Italian-American translator Lawrence Venuti is a representative of the deconstructionism trend.Under the guidance of Venuti’s resistant translation theory, this thesis tries to make a research on Yang Xianyi and Gladys Yang’s English version The Sun Shines over the Sanggan River.Resistant translation aims to retain the culture of the original text and further challenge the dominant position of American and English cultures through adopting foreignization strategy during translating process, and keeping the foreignness and strangeness of the source language as much as possible. This thesis targets the folk adages translations in Yang’s English version of The Sun Shines over the Sanggan River, and conducts a discussion on the translation phenomenon and reasons of the application of resistant translation.Folk adage is a type of language with fixed patterns which is mainly created by laborers and enjoys great popularization among ordinary people.Since rich Chinese cultural elements are included in folk adages, how to retain them in Western language matters to the transmission of Chinese culture and values.Enlightened by the resistant translation theory, this paper discusses whether resistant translation exists in folk adages translations, and tries to find out what has made an influence on it.Through investigations, most folk adages in the novel present the features of resistant translation which to some extent are influenced by two aspects: boycott of Western cultural hegemony in China, and translators’ foreignization strategy. |
