This translation report describes the English-Chinese practice about Eleanor Brown's novel The Light of Paris and the report has been finished based on the first chapter of the novel. The Light of Paris mainly tells the story of Madeleine and her grandmother Margie who pursue dreams and happy lives. The main purpose of this report is, by combining the translation theory with this translation practice, to analyze, study and summarize through the translation process. As a common literary genre, contemporary novels are popular with readers. At the same time, more and more translators pay attention to the translation of novels. Different writers have different writing styles,so it is a great challenge for the translator to reproduce the original style in translation and let the target readers get the similar reading experience with original readers. In this translation practice, with the help of the Eugene Nida's Functional Equivalence Theory, the translation text emphasizes the functional equivalence between the source text and the target text. And this paper aims to explore the translation strategies and skills about such texts. This report consists of three parts, an introduction, the main body and a conclusion. The introduction mainly introduces the background of the selected topic, the presenting situation of the translation of contemporary literary, the problems to be solved in this report and the application value and practical significance of the translation practice. The main body includes three chapters. The first chapter describes the task requirement, including the introduction of the writer and the novel, the goals translation task and the introduction of the translation theory. The second chapter is the process of the translation, including pre-translation preparation, the translation phase and the proofreading. The pre, translation preparation includes reading the source text, choosing the translation tools and searching the relevant materials. In the process of preparation, the translator selects the different translation skills and methods based on the Equivalence Functional Theory. After finishing the translation, the translator reviews the Chinese version. The third chapter is cases analysis, the heart of this report, which mainly introduces some representative cases. The translator uses some translation strategies to analyze these examples based on functional equivalence theory so as to achieve the functional equivalence between the source text and the target text.In the last part, the translator summarizes the problems encountered in the translation process and lists the key point which should be paid attention to in the future studying as well as shares the gains from this translation practice.
