Study On The Creation And Acceptation Of Wang Xiaoshuai’ Films

Director Wang Xiaoshuai and his serious films seem to be out of tune with this highly commercialized entertainment society.Although Wang Xiao shuai frequents the major film festivals and even got several awards,his films still receive a cold welcome in the mainstream film market.This is mainly owing to the separation between Wang Xiaoshuai’s creation and audience’ acceptation.This thesis,by exploring both his film creation and acceptation,aims to find a balance between them,thus serving as a reference for China’s serious films’ creation and survival.In the first chapter,I will focus on the creation of the director.I will analyze the themes,images and language in Wang Xiaoshuai’s films:Wang Xiaoshuai’s films bear many characteristics of spiritual autobiography.The whole film is a metaphor or a memory of his own life.At the same time,Wang Xiaoshuai shows great concern for the life and fate of those nobodies in the social transition.To tally with this serious realism theme,language of his films is also calm and reserved.In the second chapter,I will focus on the audience’ acceptation.I will divide Wang Xiaoshuai’s films into three types according to the audience’ acceptation and probe into the reasons behind this disparity.Among these works,some enjoy a good reputation,some are the director’s failed attempts,and some have merely a small group of audience because of the marginal subjects.In the third chapter,I will further my study as to how to achieve a balance between the director’s creation and audience’ acceptation,as well as some changes that directors can make.I try to give some concrete suggestions from the conceptual level to the technical level.Meanwhile,we should also expect that the market and audience can give more attention and space to the serious films.In the conclusion part,I will sum up and ponder over the creation and living conditions of Wang Xiaoshuai and China’s serious films.
