Corpus-based Research Of Carlos Rojas' Translator's Style

Traditionally, the study of the style of translation mainly focuses on the style of the original works but not the manifestation of the style of the translators. Thanks to the rising recognition of the translator's role in translation and development of corpus-based translation study, it is possible for researchers to bring the translator's style into a new stage, where corpus-based approach with quantitative and objective characteristics is applied.Based on Mona Baker's methodological framework for investigating translator's style in literary translation, this thesis investigates Carlos Rojas' translation style in Lenin'Kisses at three levels:lexical, syntactical and textual. With the aid of corpus tools, three comparable corpora (LK, RS and CEN50) and one parallel corpus of Lenin's kisses and Shouhuo (LK-SH) are built and examined in the study.Through the statistical analysis and discussion, this research shows that Carlos Rojas displays a distinctive translation style in his translation of Lenin's Kisses and some major features of his translation are presented:At the lexical level,1) In terms of the STTR and lexical density analysis, LK has less lexical variety than RS and CEN50; 2) In terms of mean word length, Rojas's translation shares the average mean word length; 3) As to the word distribution, Rojas shows no distinct features; 4) In terms of the high frequency words in LK, it is believed that Rojas' translation style features with explicitation by applying various translation methods and techniques. At the syntactical level,1) In terms of mean sentence length, Rojas is featured with longest mean sentence length due to his preference of maintaining the long sentence structure of the source text; 2) Rojas tends to use more complex sentence than Goldblatt and average English novel writers with high frequency of "that" and preference of the conjunction "whereupon"; 3) Rojas is faithful to the source text in the use of punctuation marks but also makes some adjustments, such as the increase of question and exclamation marks and decrease of colon due to the language difference and personal understanding; 4) Rojas tends to make the conjunction "that" more explicit after the reporting word "say" in his translation than Goldblatt. At the textual level,1) Rojas uses more personal and demonstrative reference compared with Glodblatt and English writers as the cohesive device to improve the unity of his translation. In the conjunction and substitution use, he uses more "and" than other simple conjunctions and more verbal substitution "do so" than Glodblatt and other English writers; 2) The readability of Rojas' translation is lower than that of Goldblatt and original English novel, which means it is the most difficult one to read.These findings may serve as the reference for the understanding of Rojas' translation style and the research itself can be an empirical case for corpus-based translation study.
