Like many other modern writers, Ke Ling is from the rural to the urban, with a local complex and urban experiences. He has been deeply influenced by the rural tradition and urban civilization, especially the left-wing culture. Based on the reality of urban and rural life and the position of the left-wing culture, he is good at exploring and dissecting the multi-leveled living conditions and customs of the urban and rural areas, forming a three-dimensional customs gallery where the rural style and the urban style reflect each other and coexist. He uses both the prose and the essay forms to reveal the different styles and diverse states between urban and rural cultures; instead of simply viewing the differences between the two cultures, he, with a vision of modern, distinguishes true and false, beauty and ugliness in these two cultures, shows his praise and satire, or, love and hate to them in a clear way, and represents the urban and rural cultural viewpoints of the left-wing writers and the realistic spirit. This is unique in urban and rural writings of 1930s and 40s, possessing the literary historical meaning in case studies. This paper, applying the method of comparative study on literary genre and combining it with text interpretation and cultural sociology analysis method, has a comparative analysis and comprehensive research on the two types of styles—rural st yle and urban style—in Ke Ling's prose. Firstly, it generalizes the basic content and development context of the rural and urban styles in his works. Then, it has a study on the interrelationship between the two in the aspects of viewpoint and reason relation. Finally, it analyzes the style characteristics and artistic pursuit of the two.
