From 1853 to 1854, Samule Wells Williams as the chief interpreter involved in the American expedition on Japan and achieve success.This marked America ahead of the other European countries to open up trade with Japan, it's of great significance to the development of the United States in East Asia.The middle of the 19th century, the United States completed the mainland expansion, they put their eye view into the vast Pacific Ocean, and paid attention to the two major East Asian countries:China and Japan.For Japan, the United States is almost not understanding, its relevant knowledge depends on the activities of the missionary group in East Asia.The United States out of the need of market development at home and abroad,decided to send Perry fleet expedition on Japan.In the face of this difficult mission, Perry found Samule Wells Williams in China whose on the fame of "East Asia through".In the appeal to the interests of the state, Samule Wells Williams put down his work, and devoting himself to American expedition on Japan.During the period, Samule Wells Williams with the strong religious motivation, and focus on different realistic interests of both sides, using the flexible diplomacy, as a bridge between the United States and Japan smoothly negotiations.Both avoid United States stimulate Japan and seize the opportunity with diplomatic intimidate force to Japan compromise to the United States.The result is the two sides signed the "Kanagawa Treaty ".But must point out that, it is not only Williams one's power, but its role is not to be ignored.
