Translation Report On Chapters 7 And 8 Of A Culture Perspective On High Tang Literature

This translation report is based on the author’s translation practice of "Shaanxi Normal University Translation Project on Excellent Academic Works of Philosophy and Social Sciences". The author translated the seventh chapter and part of the eighth chapter of A Culture Perspective on High Tang Literature and wrote this report.Taoist terminology, as the core content of Taoist culture, contains profound cultural connotation of Chinese characteristics. The translation of Taoist terminology plays an important role in Chinese culture transmission. However, It is difficult to find equivalent expression in target language and the ambiguity of Taoist terminology concept limits the degree of translatability. As a result, few translation theory can effectively guide Taoist terminology translation, which brings great difficulty in the author’s translation practice process.Memetics is a new theory in recent years. It provides not only a new way of thinking for translation theory and translation practice but a new tool to study specific translation problems. Meme is the unit of culture transmission. From the perspective of Memetics, translators are the agents of original ideas. Translators can transmit and develop original ideas through replication and transmission activities of meme. Under this background, in combination with memetics and translation practice of the author, this report mainly analyzes the Taoist terminology (memes) through classification. The author hopes this report can give some enlightenment to those who do the related researches.This report totally consists of five parts. The first part is about the description of this translation project. Firstly, it introduces the research background, and then states main content, writing style and the research significance and so on.The second part describes the translation project from the pre-translation process, the translation process and the post-translation process. The pre-translation process states some preparations such as reading, background information and references, translation tools and translation methods to understand the text, and then analyzes the feasibility. The translation process includes text compression, term normalization and the translation process. At last, it summarizes the post-translation process.The third part is about theory analysis. Firstly, it gives a general introduction of memetics in three aspects including formation and development, characteristics and the translation of "meme"; and then it briefly introduces the formation and development of translation memetics; at the end of this part, it states the relationship between memes and translation and the directive function of memetics to Taoist culture translation.The fourth part is about case analysis. Based on the meme classification of Chesterman and combining translation methods such as transliteration, free translation and literal translation, the author divides the Taoist terminology memes in this translation project into three parts including source-target Taoist terminology memes, equivalence Taoist terminology memes as well as free translation and literal translation Taoist terminology memes. Then it states that Taoist terminology translation should also follow the principle of nationality and stipulation.The last part summarizes experience and lessons the author has learned in this translation process and states the issues which still remain to be addressed.
