This thesis addresses the English-Chinese translation process of the Earth Science Textbook for American middle school students.Found in the category of scientific English, the original text is featured with the following aspects:the accuracy in expression,well-established structure and logical discourses. It is noted that there are many cause-effect relationships in explaining proposition, formulating hypothesis, discussing problems and making conclusions. Therefore,it is important to recognize these cause-effect relationships in order to clarify the relevancy among the subjects and to render proper translation.Such logical equivalency also serves as the criteria for checking the quality of the translated version. For this purpose the principles of logic were applied into the translation process. The proposition logic, function and other logical methods were employed in analyzing the original text structure and in discourse translation, for achieving the goal of logical equivalency between the original and translated version. In the main body of this report the representative examples, all picked from the original text, are used to illustrate the application of logical analysis models in translation. The details of application were discussed, covering the identification and expression of cause-effect relationship in the sentences with the SVO and SVP constructions, the prepositional phrase, the passive voice, the non-finite verbs, the subordinate clause, among others. It turns out that the logical analysis plays an important role in translation for this project, especially in cases of complex sentences and discourse with complicated logical relationship. As a general rule, the translation process was defined as the following procedures:firstly, using the logical analysis model to clear the logical relations of sentences;then, combined with other translation skills to produce the translated texts;and finally, checking the original and translated text from both semantic and logical aspects. This model is applicable to the translation in other fields.
