Liu Changqing, sealed as the great wall of five-syllable poems was an exceptional figure of outstanding ability in his time. However few of his masterpieces can reflect the flourishing period of Tang Dynasty. Instead of enthusiasm his poems tends to convey more despondent feelings to readers. This is related with the time and society he lived and also connected with his disposition. This article will divided in three chapters and breakthrough from the tragic factors of Liu's character to analyze his poem composition and attitude toward life and society.The first chapter will analyze the tragic factors in Liu's character in view of character formation and divided in three parts. The first part is from his family background.This part will discuss how his family environment influenced him. The second part is from his self experience. The third part is from the history and society background. This part will refer to the social environment of Tang Dynasty to analyze Liu's dramatic hard life. Imperial examination failures wrongfully imprisoned and banished from the court. Those experiences definitely influenced his character.The second chapter will analyze Liu's attitude toward life and society under his tragic character. This chapter will tell the feature of his character and how it may influence his attitudes of life. He had a period of confusing time during his first demotion then he turned to be sentimental and negative on it when he was demoted again. Another important point is his turn into the Buddhism. This chapter will enunciate his choice from the Buddhism then in Tang Dynasty, his own character and the comfort he got from it.The last chapter will analyze his poem composition under tragic factors in Liu's character. This chapter will discuss it in four parts. First, he was talented in composing poems with blue sentiment. Second, he tends to place more weight on lonesome images in poetry. "boat " ? "green hill " ? "closed gate " etc are especially preferred. Third, he always let his sadness run into his poems consciously. His lonely feelings?hermit complex and religious devotion can easily be inferred from his poems. The last, is his poetry style. He pursued plain and quiet life in his scenic poems. He told his despondent in his degraded poems. He expressed his confusion and suffering in his war poems. All those styles are closely related with Liu Changqing's tragic factors in his character.
