A Study On Modern Chinese Construction "Qie X Qie Y"

As a modern Chinese construction, "qie X qie Y" has existed since ancient times and generalized under the influence of online buzzwords in recent years, which is worth attention. Previous study mainly concerns about semantic and syntactic analysis on this construction, while lacking pragmatic research and comparison methods, as well as the synchronic and diachronic analysis on the construction, so its research perspective can be one-sided. In this thesis, based on former research, we try to illustrate the characteristics of this construction from constituents, cognitive semantics and the analysis of construction, with reference to CCL corpus and network news items.Through investigation, we found that, firstly, for the constituents, the syllables of X and Y can be both single or double, also X is single while Y is double, and the situation of X and Y are both single is the most common one; the semantic relationship between X and Y can be similar, relevant and contrary,and the last two conditions make the equal proportion; the parts of speech in X and Y are both adjectives or verbs, or X is a verb while Y is an adjective, and the verbs can make the most cases; the position of X and Y can be interchangeable when their meanings are related or opposite, but they cannot be interchanged when X is a prerequisite of Y, the difference in semantic emphasis and XY is a compound word and so forth.Secondly, for the cognitive sementics, the causes of the mutual positions of X and Y are cognitive thinking, context, frequency of use and formation of compound word, which embody The Principle of Order Iconicity; the cognition mechanism in X and Y of the construction can be explained by Prototype and Category Theory, Event-domain Cognitive Model, and Iconicity; the meaning of the whole construction in some cases can be expounded by Conceptual Metaphor Theory.Thirdly, for the construction analysis, the theory of Construction Coercion can elaborate the mechanism in syllables, parts of speech, semantics between X and Y, also the whole structure; the semantic hierarchy can be categorized into three types by Conceptual Blending Theory; the syntactic function of this construction is to make the non-word morpheme used independently and create new clauses; from the features in its diachronic evolvement we see that in X and Y, the parts of speech are both nouns, verbs or adjectives, and the single syllable are commonly-used. Besides, the construction "qie zhan qie Y" or "qie xing qie Y" is developed stably. Moreover, the constructional meaning is that two elements(X and Y) happen at the same time, the reason for its evolvement is that Grammaticalization and Economy Principle of Language and so on.
